Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma:  Consists in a series of diseases, in most cases, characterized by the increase in ocular pressure, loss of the visual field and a progressive lesion of the optical nerve.

Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of eye sight loss. This pathology, in most cases, begins with the asymptomatic increase of intraocular pressure, then there is a progressive loss of the nerve fibers that connect the eye to the brain and finally, blindness.

The progression of Glaucoma can be stopped with the adequate treatment (either surgical or pharmacological) when it is diagnosed.

The sooner it is detected and treated the benefits will be greater hence the visual quality will be prolonged and will allow a normal life with eye sight.

At the Clínica Láser de Ojos we count with effective treatments and equipment in the early detection of Glaucoma: (fieldmetry) campimetry and topography of the optical nerve. The topography which studies the anatomy of the head of the optical nerve allows to detect minute changes preceding by many years the Glaucoma symptoms.  It is also a basic tool in the follow up of the optical nerve in cases where there is doubt in the diagnosis.

Every person over 50 years of age needs a careful evaluation of the optical nerve and the intraocular pressure. Persons with family history of glaucoma or diabetes, the evaluation is very important as early as 40 years of age.
